Cold Weather Tips for Cats: Keep them Warm this Winter

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Winter is almost here.  The cold weather is coming and you need to be more aware of the temperatures.  Since cats have a litter box, it is recommended that the cats simply stay inside during the cold winter months.

However if your cat is an outdoor lover, make sure he has a warm place to go and has an all natural cat food to keep him healthy during these months.  Also be sure to keep fresh water in a warm place so that it does not freeze.

Consider only allowing them to go outdoors for a couple of hours.  Then call them back in so you know where they are.

Cats have a higher risk of getting seriously hurt because they tend to crawl up into warm places like a car engine.  When the engine is started up, the cat can be injured seriously or even killed by the fan blade or belt.

Your cat will be safer when kept indoors during these months.  When your cat does go outdoors, make sure you always know where he is before you start your vehicle or any other piece of machinery.

Stock up on all natural supplements for your cat.  This will help to ensure your cat has a strong immune system to ward off any common illnesses due to the cold.  Don’t forget to provide a high quality healthy cat food, as well.

Remember, the best place for your cat this winter is inside with you.  But, if your cat does like the outdoors, follow these cold weather tips to be sure he is safe this winter.

Preventing Deadly Antifreeze Poisoning

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Soon you will be adding in antifreeze to your vehicle.  Many times, people do not pay attention to that little bit of antifreeze that drips from underneath the car.  This could be a deadly mistake that you may forever regret.

Even just a little bit can be deadly to your dog or cat. Preventing antifreeze poisoning is the best thing you can do.

While there is no all natural antifreeze for your vehicle, there is a safer, less-toxic alternative to the ethylene glycol that is deadly to your pet.  This year, consider propylene-glycol based antifreeze.

Other tips for preventing deadly antifreeze poisoning:

*Have your vehicle maintained regularly.
*Keep a look out for leaks, such as greenish pools under your car.
*Clean up spills immediately.
*Do not let your dog wander the neighborhood.  Those who do not have dogs may not be as careful in their driveways.
*Keep antifreeze jugs up high where they cannot get knocked over.

Symptoms come in two stages.  Stage one will occur approximately 30 minutes after ingestion.  The tricky part is that your dog or cat may “seem” better for about a day or two and then stage two will follow.

Stage One:

*Staggering
*Vomiting
*Confusion
*Listlessness
*Excessive drinking and urination

Stage Two:

*Diarrhea
*Convulsions
*Unconsciousness

If you suspect your dog or cat has ingested antifreeze, the only thing you can do is take your pet to the veterinarian.  While inducing vomiting can help to get some of the antifreeze out of his system, only a veterinarian can help him.

Make the switch to the less toxic antifreeze this season.  While it is not an all natural solution, it is a better alternative.

Protect your Pets from Pesky Insects

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Weather you have an inside dog or cat or an outside dog or cat, your furry loved one is bound to attract some of those unwanted pests, such as fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes.  Go all natural with an all natural insect/tick repellent to keep your dog from having to deal with those pesky pests crawling all over their body, and ultimately inside your home.

This recipe was recommended by CJ Puotinen, contributing editor for Taste for Life and the author of The Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care.

20 drops rose geranium, palmarosa, or myrrh oil
3 drops citronella oil
3 drops rosemary or lavender oil
3 drops clove oil
1 tbsp bay rum or bay tincture (alcohol base)
1 tbsp black walnut hull tincture (alcohol base)

Mix these together and add one cup of water, Aloe Vera gel OR add a combination of both.  The different oils play a different part in this all natural insect repellent.  Rose geranium, palmarosa, or myrrh oil helps to repel ticks.  Citronella repels mosquitoes.  Black walnut helps to repel flies and fleas.  Rosemary, as well as lavender and clove are an all purpose insect repellent.

Why subject your loveable furry friend to poisons when you can give them an all natural repellent that will not harm them in the process?  It is worth a try!

Be Aware of What you are Feeding your Cat

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

There are many cat lovers out there who feed their cat the “more expensive” commercial cat food thinking they are doing something good for their cat.  Sadly, not many people are aware that many of the commercial brand cat food, as well as dog food contain ingredients that are not only unhealthy, but can be harmful to their overall health.

Your cat eats the same food day in and day out.  Other than treats, the cat food you give him will be what he eats.  Make what you do feed your cat healthy full of vitamins and minerals without artificial flavors, colors, sugars, wheat, gluten, corn, by-products, or chemical preservatives, which are what can be found in your commercial brand cat food, including the more expensive kind.

Find an all natural cat food that has high quality meat proteins that are not by-products, such as the remains of meat that are not meant for human consumption.  This would include bones, intestines, heads, tendons, ligaments, feet, etc.  Your cat is not getting the full benefits of protein when this is all she is getting.

Avoid the effects commercial brand cat food can have on your cat’s health.  Avoid allergies caused by these ingredients, as well as the harmful effects of chemical preservatives.  Ensure your cat will live a long and full life by finding an all natural cat food from a trusted source, such as Life’s Abundance or Flint River Ranch.  These are just two of many all natural cat food manufacturers.

Your furry friend deserves to live a healthy and happy life free of the diseases caused by not eating all natural cat food.  Show your cat some love by knowing what is in the cat food you serve her.

Pet Food Café is here to help you raise a healthy and happy pet so you can enjoy life together for a very long time.  Our all natural pet food, all natural pet supplies, and training tips will ensure your dog or cat has the best life possible.

Got Allergies? Just Give your Cat a Bath!

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Just because you or a family member is allergic to your cat does not mean you have to live a life without your lovable furry feline friend!  Do not let an allergist tell you that you have to get rid of your cat because of allergies.  Yes, it is the best solution for those of you who are highly allergic, but there are some things you can do to try and control and possibly eliminate allergies altogether.  However, if your allergies are life-threatening, you must follow the advice of your allergist and doctor.

There are a few things you can do, such as create an allergy free zone in your home where the cat is not allowed.  This will generally be in the bedroom.  Use a high efficiency HEPA air cleaner in the bedroom, as well.    Cover the mattress, box spring, and pillows with impermeable covers because even though the cat is not allowed in the bedroom, allergens will come in by your clothing and other objects.

Give your cat a bath once a week!  This can reduce the levels of allergens in your home as much as 84%!  There are products that will say that you can spray them on and this will reduce the dander; however, I recommend a weekly bath with a revitalizing, natural shampoo and conditioner.  Using a spray on leave in conditioner is okay; however, your cat will need to actually be washed and rinsed with an all natural shampoo in order to get rid of that dander.

Visit our site for an all natural shampoo and all natural conditioner to help with reducing the allergen particles, so that you can live a symptom free life with your loveable cat!
