With the warmer months ahead, you may be planning on taking a vacation. You don’t have to leave your dog at home. With a little bit of dog obedience training and careful planning, your dog can enjoy a vacation with you, as well.
While it is possible to travel by air with your dog, the best way to travel is by automobile. Get your dog used to the car by taking him on short rides to the park, the vet, the store, etc. Be sure to take him other places then the vet so he does not only associate car rides with a bad experience at the vet.
Make plans ahead of time before heading out on the road. Plan to stop every 3 – 5 hours for your dog to rest and go to the bathroom. Make a list of any veterinarian hospitals along the route you will be taking.
Checklist of items to bring along for the trip:
• Leash
• Dog seat belt or crate
• Bowls for food and water
• Natural dog food
• Natural dog treats
• Toys
• Plastic bags to pick up dog waste
• Medications, if needed
• Blanket or dog bed
• Medical records
You will want to double check with the hotel to be sure what costs are involved for your pet. Be careful, as many hotels will take full advantage of the fact that a dog will be in the room. There will likely be a daily fee for your dog. Many hotels will charge a non-refundable deposit, as well as a clean up fee.
Have fun with your dog this spring and summer. However, being prepared can truly ensure that your dog is safe. Be sure your dog is up to date on all his shots and make sure he has a collar that has your name and address on it. There is nothing worse than losing your dog on vacation.
