Be Prepared with a First Aid Kit for Dogs

Friday, January 29th, 2010

All dog owners know that dogs are very curious and can’t seem to keep their noses out of trouble.  Their noses tend to lead them to places we never even think of.  They will follow their noses wherever it leads them, no matter what the consequences may be.

It is important to be prepared in the event of a true emergency.  With a dog, you simply never know when you might be facing a serious sickness or accident.

Here are some items to include in a first aid kit for dogs:

• Ear cleaning solution
• Plain saline eyewash
• All natural dog shampoo
• Dog nail clippers
• Tweezers
• Electric hair clipper
• Chlorhexidine (wound cleaner)
• Gauze (2 inches wide)
• Bandage tape (1 inch wide)
• Antibiotic ointment
• Hydrocortisone Spray for bug bites or itchy wounds
• 3cc oral medication syringe
• Muzzle
• Benadryl
• Baby thermometer
• 10cc oral medication syringe for flushing wounds or inducing vomiting
• 3% hydrogen peroxide for inducing vomiting
• All natural dog treats for extra special care

Note:  Even if you never imagined muzzling your dog, dogs that are in pain are not themselves.   Keep it in the kit in case you need to muzzle him to keep him from biting at you or the wound while you are tending to his wounds.

While it is nice to include an all natural dog treat in the kit, be sure he is able to have a treat.  If you are dealing with an ingestion emergency, it is better if you refrain from giving him any all natural dog food or treats until a veterinarian has seen him.

I hope that no one ever has to use their emergency first aid kits for dogs, but it is highly recommended that you have one on hand, just in case.

Warning – Too Much Road Salt can be Toxic to your Pet

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Alerts were issued by the ASPCA in 2000 warning pet owners about the toxicity of road salt.  Health Canada and Environment Canada declared road salt as a toxic product in 2001.

Road salt contains chlorides, such as:  sodium chloride, calcium chloride, potassium chloride or magnesium chloride.  These are highly toxic if ingested by your pet.  Despite the toxicity of road salt, our roads are still being salted with these toxic salts.

It is important to watch for the following signs:

• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Salivation
• Depression
• Anorexia
• Tremors
• Disorientation
• Excessive thirst
• Seizures

It is important to know that if your pet ingests enough road salt, it could be fatal.  It takes 4g of sodium chloride per 1kg of body weight to be lethal for your pet.   Your pet would have to ingest quite a bit of ice melt for him to become seriously ill; however, the other symptoms are not fun for him to deal with.

There are some things you can do to help your pet avoid ice melt toxicity.  Simply wash his paws after you have taken him for a walk and if he has been playing in the snow.  Do not let your dog or cat eat snow, and don’t allow them to drink out of puddles.  This could be harder to control with a cat.  If possible, limit the time your cat is outside.

Not too many people are aware of the toxicity of ice melt.  Please pass this information on to pet owners you know.  You could be helping to save their pet’s life.

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Is it hard to turn down those puppy dog eyes or the cute little purr of your cat?   Of course it is!  Guess what?  You don’t have to completely give up spoiling your furry friend.  The key is to find an all natural pet food and all natural treat that will make your cat or dog feel like he is being spoiled.

Try adding a little bit of canned all natural pet food to your pet’s dry food.  This will really make them feel like they are special.  The point is that you can still spoil your dog or cat without throwing him fattening and unhealthy table food scraps.

Make sure your pet gets a lot of exercise.  This does not have to be boring.  By simply taking the time to play with him, you will be helping him to lose weight and maintain that healthy weight.
So, you see, you do not have to give up on spoiling your pet.  Simply take care in what you are spoiling him with.  However, just because you are feeding him all natural does not mean you should go overboard.  Sparingly give your pet an all natural treat and he will feel extra special each time!

Dog Obedience Tip – Teach your Dog how to Sit

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

The “sit” command is the most basic dog obedience command.    This simple dog obedience command could be what keeps your dog out of trouble.   The goal is to get your dog to sit on the floor with your head looking up at you when you say the word, “sit.”

At this point of dog obedience training, your dog should know and respond to his name.   With a clear and calm voice, call your dog by his name.  Show your dog that all natural treat he loves and make sure you have plenty on hand.

With your dog in a standing position, hold the treat close to his nose, and then move it to just above his head, while moving the treat backwards slowly.   Your dog will automatically bend his leg.  While his legs are bending, say “sit.” Give him one of his all natural dog treats as soon as he performs the “sit” dog obedience command and praise him with kind word.  If he does not get it right the first time, don’t worry.  It could take your dog a few times until he understands what you want.

As soon as he does get the idea, then be sure to practice a lot.   The perfect time to show you are the alpha dog, while also practicing the “sit” command is right before his dinner.   Put down his bowl and make him sit and look at you before he is allowed to eat.  This will show you are in charge, and teaches him good manners, while practicing his command.

Dog Obedience Tip for Teaching your Dog to Stop Begging

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Dogs have a way of getting us to do things we shouldn’t do, such as tossing them some food under the table during dinner time.  While this may not seem like such a terrible thing to do at first, you will quickly learn it can lead to some seriously annoying bad habits, such as whining, begging, and jumping on you during dinner.

Through dog obedience training, you can easily curb begging.  However, it is extremely important that you and your entire family are consistent.  The first time you give in before he has fully learned this dog training method, you will have only taught him that he just needs to whine a little bit longer!

You only need this one dog obedience command and a lot of patience and consistency. Teaching him the dog training command “Down” is all you need to do.  Make him lie down in a specific spot at dinner time each night.

It is equally important to reward him for staying in his spot.  Reward him with one of his all natural dog treats.    Understand, this will take a few times of reinforcing.  Just stick with it and you will be on your way to relaxing dinners again.

Preventing and Treating Frostbite in Cats and Dogs

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

This is the time of year to protect your dog or cat from frostbite.  Generally, frostbite will occur in the exposed extremities in your cat or dog, especially the tail, paws, and ears.    It is important to keep your dog or cat indoors as much as possible during the freezing temperatures.  Make sure to take into consideration the wind chill, as this is the temperature that it really feels like to your dog or cat.

How can you tell if your dog or cat has frostbite?  The frozen extremities will look pale and cold.  They will likely separate from the underlying tissues.  There could be pain and swelling, blisters, and skin ulcers.

What can you do for your pet if there are signs of frostbite?   Wrap your pet in a towel or blanket.  Put warm water bottles or some other source of heat between your pet and the towel.  This will restore his/her core body temperature.  Warning!  Do not burn your pet.

If you will not be able to make it to the veterinarian immediately, you can bathe the frozen parts in warm water until the color of pink is restored.  Get to the veterinarian as soon as possible to find out if there are any long term effects from the frostbite.

One way to help to prevent your pet from suffering from frostbite is to provide a healthy all natural dog or cat food that will provide the nutrients necessary for good circulation.  Good circulation to the extremities will help to keep the blood flowing to these parts to help prevent frostbite.

Remember to keep your pets inside during the extreme cold.    It is important to allow your pet’s paws to toughen up gradually as the cold weather arrives.  However, even the toughest paws can only stand so much cold.  Get your dog or cat out and in as soon as you can to prevent frostbite.
