All Natural Tip – Homemade Flea Repellent for Pets and Homes

March 10th, 2010 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Flea season is just around the corner.  Now is the time to start protecting your home from the hassles and annoyance of fleas.  If you are looking for a way to control fleas without the harsh chemicals, try all natural essential oils with borax.

Simply combine two cups of borax with 25 drops of a pure essential oil.  Lavender oil has been known to repel bugs.  Crush the drops and distribute evenly on your carpet.    Another option is to place a dish of soapy water under a light.  Fleas will be attracted by the warm light and will drown.

Do not include garlic in your dog’s all natural dog food.  You would need to feed your dog high doses in order for it to repel fleas and ticks.  The problem is that while your dog might tolerate it, it can cause anemia.

Do not apply orange oil directly to animals, as this can be toxic.  It is important to be very careful when using essential oils, as they are potent and condensed.

You can make a homemade flea collar for your pet by rubbing a few drops of one of the following types of oils:  eucalyptus, tea tree, lavender, or geranium oils, onto a webbing, rope collar, or doggy bandana.

Have a great flea free spring and summer.

Lamb – Their lamb is imported from New Zealand as is easier to digest.

Dog Obedience Training Tip: Stop Puppy Biting Early

March 3rd, 2010 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Puppies do not bite because they are vicious.  They bite as early as four weeks old as a form of play.  Many times, owners tend to think this is cute when they are puppies and encourage the “play” biting.   Remember that those cute little teeth will turn into bigger, stronger, and sharper teeth as they grow.  While they are still playing, this can hurt and can be more dangerous to their target.  Stop the puppy biting now with basic dog obedience training to avoid problems later in the future.

Basic Dog Obedience Steps for Puppy Biting

When your puppy starts up play with puppy biting, let him know you are in pain by crying out then stop playing immediately.  It will take some time, but your puppy will eventually connect the fact that when he starts biting, playing stops.

Another option is to make a loud noise to startle your puppy when he starts biting and give him a chew toy.  If your puppy does not respond to your voice, take an empty water jug and put a few pennies in it.  The noise will startle him.  Once he stops biting, praise him and give him a chew toy.  Have a variety of chew toys available.  Switch them out, so he does not get bored.

Make sure everyone understands the rules when it comes to puppy biting and playtime.  The kids may think it is cute, as well.  Tell your kids to stop playing immediately and physically leave the room when your puppy starts biting.  Your puppy will eventually stop because he will want his playmates to come back and play.

Good luck and happy training.

Simple Spring Dog Care Tips

March 2nd, 2010 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Spring is just around the corner.  Your dog will be excited to get out and play to relieve some of the pent up energy he has been storing all winter long.  To help your dog keep up that energy, it is important that you feed him an all natural dog food that will give him the nutrients he needs to run around and have some fun.

Mosquitoes will be coming out as the warmer weather arrives.  Mosquitoes can cause serious and fatal health problems for your dog.  Heart-worms are caused by mosquitoes.  Make sure you check with your dog’s vet to get him set up with some type of heart-worm protection.  It is critical that you talk to your dog’s vet before starting him on a heart-worm pill, as giving your dog a heart-worm pill when he has heart-worms can be fatal, as well.

Pay attention to your dog’s tolerance to the heat and sun.  Some dogs can handle the heat well, while others are not able to tolerate it, as well.  Did you know that dogs can get sunburns?  If your dog does not tolerate the heat and sun well, make sure to give him a lot of water and a place to relax where it is cooler.

Flea and tick season is approaching, as well.  There are many all natural flea and tick medicines that can be given to your dog.  Just imagine what it would be like to have those bugs all over you.  Even if your dog is an outside dog, don’t forget he is suffering if the fleas and ticks do find their way to him.

Have fun playing with your dog this spring!

Be Careful When Choosing a Commercial Weight Loss Pet Food

February 25th, 2010 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

According to a study by the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, commercial weight loss pet food may actually contain more calories than you expect.  In fact, in a study of 100 commercial weight management pet foods, more than half of the food that was evaluated exceeded the maximum kilocalorie per kilogram restriction.

Foods that say they are light, lite, or low-calorie must provide the calorie content on the labels.  Pet foods that do not have this designation are allowed to include the information, but they are not required.

Another issue found in this Jan. 2010 study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association was the high variability in feeding recommendations for weight loss.   In the study, with the feeding recommendations on the labels, pets could not lose weight and some could actually gain weight.

Choosing an all natural diet for your pet is the best route to go.  All natural pet foods do not contain preservatives or chemicals that can harm your pet.   A reputable all natural pet food, such as Life’s Abundance or Flint River Ranch, will be honest with its label information, and will ensure your pet is receiving the best all natural pet food available for weight loss.

How Can you Afford NOT to Feed your Pet All Natural?

February 19th, 2010 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Your pet deserves the best life possible.  While feeding your pet all natural pet food may seem to be outrageously expensive initially, it is important to understand that in the long run, feeding your pet all natural pet food can actually save you money.

You may be wondering how that could be possible when it costs so much for a bag of all natural pet food.  Let’s take a more in depth look.  When you feed your pet healthy pet food, you will feed him almost 20% to 40% less than a store brand pet food.  How is this possible?  It is simple.  All natural healthy pet food is not made up of fillers and by-products.  Therefore, your pet will become fuller and stay fuller longer with less food.

Another savings is the fact that feeding your pet all natural healthy pet food will likely lower the amount of vet visits.  Allergies are the #1 reason for vet visits.  Commercial brand pet foods have chemicals and preservatives that many pets are allergic to.  These same ingredients can lead to very serious health issues, including death.

Your pet deserves the best.  Imagine if your pet could be with you years longer just because of the food you feed him?  Remember, it all evens out in the end as far as money, but his life expectancy will not even out.  The facts are when you feed your pet a healthy food, you could be extending the years he has to spend with you. How can you afford NOT to feed him an all natural healthy diet?

Be Prepared with a First Aid Kit for Dogs

January 29th, 2010 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

All dog owners know that dogs are very curious and can’t seem to keep their noses out of trouble.  Their noses tend to lead them to places we never even think of.  They will follow their noses wherever it leads them, no matter what the consequences may be.

It is important to be prepared in the event of a true emergency.  With a dog, you simply never know when you might be facing a serious sickness or accident.

Here are some items to include in a first aid kit for dogs:

• Ear cleaning solution
• Plain saline eyewash
• All natural dog shampoo
• Dog nail clippers
• Tweezers
• Electric hair clipper
• Chlorhexidine (wound cleaner)
• Gauze (2 inches wide)
• Bandage tape (1 inch wide)
• Antibiotic ointment
• Hydrocortisone Spray for bug bites or itchy wounds
• 3cc oral medication syringe
• Muzzle
• Benadryl
• Baby thermometer
• 10cc oral medication syringe for flushing wounds or inducing vomiting
• 3% hydrogen peroxide for inducing vomiting
• All natural dog treats for extra special care

Note:  Even if you never imagined muzzling your dog, dogs that are in pain are not themselves.   Keep it in the kit in case you need to muzzle him to keep him from biting at you or the wound while you are tending to his wounds.

While it is nice to include an all natural dog treat in the kit, be sure he is able to have a treat.  If you are dealing with an ingestion emergency, it is better if you refrain from giving him any all natural dog food or treats until a veterinarian has seen him.

I hope that no one ever has to use their emergency first aid kits for dogs, but it is highly recommended that you have one on hand, just in case.

Warning – Too Much Road Salt can be Toxic to your Pet

January 28th, 2010 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Alerts were issued by the ASPCA in 2000 warning pet owners about the toxicity of road salt.  Health Canada and Environment Canada declared road salt as a toxic product in 2001.

Road salt contains chlorides, such as:  sodium chloride, calcium chloride, potassium chloride or magnesium chloride.  These are highly toxic if ingested by your pet.  Despite the toxicity of road salt, our roads are still being salted with these toxic salts.

It is important to watch for the following signs:

• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Salivation
• Depression
• Anorexia
• Tremors
• Disorientation
• Excessive thirst
• Seizures

It is important to know that if your pet ingests enough road salt, it could be fatal.  It takes 4g of sodium chloride per 1kg of body weight to be lethal for your pet.   Your pet would have to ingest quite a bit of ice melt for him to become seriously ill; however, the other symptoms are not fun for him to deal with.

There are some things you can do to help your pet avoid ice melt toxicity.  Simply wash his paws after you have taken him for a walk and if he has been playing in the snow.  Do not let your dog or cat eat snow, and don’t allow them to drink out of puddles.  This could be harder to control with a cat.  If possible, limit the time your cat is outside.

Not too many people are aware of the toxicity of ice melt.  Please pass this information on to pet owners you know.  You could be helping to save their pet’s life.

Dog Obedience Tip – Teach your Dog how to Sit

January 22nd, 2010 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

The “sit” command is the most basic dog obedience command.    This simple dog obedience command could be what keeps your dog out of trouble.   The goal is to get your dog to sit on the floor with your head looking up at you when you say the word, “sit.”

At this point of dog obedience training, your dog should know and respond to his name.   With a clear and calm voice, call your dog by his name.  Show your dog that all natural treat he loves and make sure you have plenty on hand.

With your dog in a standing position, hold the treat close to his nose, and then move it to just above his head, while moving the treat backwards slowly.   Your dog will automatically bend his leg.  While his legs are bending, say “sit.” Give him one of his all natural dog treats as soon as he performs the “sit” dog obedience command and praise him with kind word.  If he does not get it right the first time, don’t worry.  It could take your dog a few times until he understands what you want.

As soon as he does get the idea, then be sure to practice a lot.   The perfect time to show you are the alpha dog, while also practicing the “sit” command is right before his dinner.   Put down his bowl and make him sit and look at you before he is allowed to eat.  This will show you are in charge, and teaches him good manners, while practicing his command.
